Phase I Treatment
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have their first orthodontic examination around age 7-8. Although treatment typically doesn’t begin immediately, it allows the opportunity for a free evaluation to decide if early treatment is necessary.
Although most children don’t require early treatment, certain issues are best treated while the jaws are just beginning to develop. Evaluating your child at an early age can help avoid extraction of adult teeth and correct additional problems that can’t be fixed later in adolescence. Early treatment, which is also called Phase I, is best for treating children with crossbites, habits (i.e. thumb sucking, tongue thrusts or mouth breathing), severe crowding, overbites, underbites and traumatic biting that can lead to teeth chipping or recession.
If your child’s jaws are developing normally, we like to see them every six months for a complimentary appointment to monitor their development until they are ready for orthodontic treatment.
It is recommended that most patients start orthodontic treatment around adolescence, which is considered Phase 2. Orthodontists have found that timing the start of braces around a patient’s growth spurt leads to the most stable long-term result. Treatment is occasionally recommended earlier in childhood but the majority of patients are treated in a single phase once most of the adult teeth have erupted into the mouth.
Orthodontic problems don’t improve with age – they simply become harder to treat as bones become stiffer and more developed. It’s easier to treat many orthodontic issues during adolescence because the body is still growing rapidly. In later years, when the bones of the face and jaw are fully developed, many conditions or malocclusions become more difficult, costly and time-consuming to treat.
Every child is different, and everyone gets their full set of adult teeth at different times. An evaluation by Dr. Friedman can help determine a timeline for when your child will be ready to begin their orthodontic treatment.

After your braces, aligners and/or other orthodontic appliances have been completed, retention treatment follows. You will speak to Dr. Friedman about life after braces and receive your retainer schedule which is extremely important to follow to ensure tooth movement does not occur after treatment.
